The 1990s in Yugoslavia – New Sources and Methodologies

The Centre for Civic Education (CCE) and the Citizens’ Association Cultural Front are announcing a call for the second generation of participants in the regional school The 1990s in Yugoslavia – New Sources and Methodologies.

This programme is designed as a part of informal and supplementary education for 25 participants from the region. Through an interdisciplinary approach, which includes lectures, discussions, work with archival sources, analysis of oral histories, a visit to the exhibition “The Labyrinth of the 1990s”, examination of museum artifacts, learning at sites of suffering, film screenings, educational and recreational content, etc. participants will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge about the socio-political context of Yugoslavia’s dissolution and scientifically established facts regarding conflicts and war crimes during the 1990s.

In addition, participants will be introduced to the latest research results conducted in Montenegro and Serbia regarding young people’s knowledge and attitudes about the 1990s in Yugoslavia, and the programme will also feature various thematic evening sessions.

Lectures will be led by professors from the University of Belgrade and the University of Montenegro, researchers from scientific institutes in the region, as well as experts in museology, cultural heritage, and film.

Who can apply?

The Regional School is a four-day programme intended for postgraduate students of history and other departments within the humanities, political sciences, journalism, and related fields, as well as young journalists, researchers, and activists from Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Slovenia. The advantage will be given to those demonstrating a high level of social engagement within governmental, non-governmental, political party, union, media, academic, and cultural sectors, as well as a strong interest in researching the history and memory of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia.

Working language of the school will be Montenegrin/Serbian/Bosnian/Croatian.

All interested candidates can apply directly via the link. Detailed information about the programme and the school’s methodology will be sent to those selected after the application evaluation process.

Application deadline:

Applications must be submitted no later than 3 September 2025, by midnight.

Logistics:

The Regional School is planned to be held in Budva, from 25 to 29 September 2025.

The organizers will cover all travel expenses (bus or train) and full board accommodation.

For participants arriving by car from outside Montenegro, fuel costs will be fully reimbursed, provided that the car carries at least two participants. If only one person is traveling by car, reimbursement is limited to a maximum of 100 EUR.

For participants arriving by plane, ticket costs will be reimbursed up to 100 EUR.
