This documentary tells a compelling story of Croatia which became a member country of the EU on the 1 July 2013: how Croatia, isolated in late 1999, broke out of its isolation, has faced with its recent past, opened up to the rest of Europe and its neighbours, and finally convinced sceptic EU members that it was ready to join the EU. All the major protagonists of that process have been interviewed in this film – presidents, prime ministers, international prosecutors, nationalists and pro-European oriented actors. The film is also a reminder how the European idea can be an inspiration for dramatic society changes.
The authors of the film, Gerald Knaus and Fritz Ofner, have based this film on ESI research. It is a part of the Return to Europe film series (www.returntoeurope.org) supported by ERSTE Foundation.
