On the occasion of the International Day for the Right to Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims, the Centre for civic education (CCE) points out on the significance of conducting continued actions in order to clarify destinies of all victims and to prosecute the ones responsible for crimes and other forms of severe violation of human rights.
By marking this day, CCE will organise screening of an excellent documentary “Naked”, by croatian author Tiha Gudac, on Tuesday, 24 March 2015, starting at 19:00, in great hall of CCE (Njegoševa 36/I, Podgorica). Naked is a touching and profound story about the drama of a political prisoner on island Goli, an intimate testimonial on history of a family whose three generations remained permanently scarred by the island Goli, as well as the ones who never succeeded in forgetting the island Goli or who never essentially left that place.
Documentary “Goli” saw its premiere in Montenegro within the fifth jubilee Fast Forward Film Festival, organised by the CCE in December 2014, and tonight it will open 64. Belgrade Festival of documentary and short film. It is the winner of numerous and prestigious awards, and the CCE is screening it again based on kind permission from the author of film Ms Tiha Gudac and producer Mr Nenad Puhovski.
Facing the past on territory of former Yugoslavia goes rather slow, with a number of obstructions in prosecution of war crimes and securing justice for victims. Such situation only contributes to atmosphere of impunity, which surely does not present solid basis for the establishment of society with functional rule of law. CCE continuously indicates on immeasurable consequences of impunity of crimes both for Montenegrin, and for other societies in region. Precisely by respecting the right to truth, we contribute in restoring dignity to victims, social integration of former fighters and establishment of peace. Also, it has strong potential in preventing these crimes from happening again.
The International Day for the Right to Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims was established by General Assembly of United Nations, as a day of remembrance of Archbishop Oscar Arnulf Romero, famous human rights defender, who was killed on 24 March 1980, due to severe convictions of human right violations of most endangered populations, by defending principles of protecting right to life, promotion of human dignity and strong opposition to all forms of violence. The purpose of marking this day is to point out on the respect and remembrance of victims of harsh and systematic violations of human rights and promote the significance of right to truth and justice.
