The RECOM Reconciliation Network (RMP) calls on the Government of Montenegro to join the countries that co-sponsor the UN Resolution on the International Remembrance Day of the Genocide in Srebrenica, as commemorating the victims of the genocide is a elementary condition to maintain responsibility and to revive the humanistic and civilized principles of society in countries in the territory of the former Yugoslavia.
The RECOM Reconciliation Network (RMP) reminds that about 35,000 citizens of Montenegro signed a petition for the establishment of the Regional Commission for the Establishment of the Facts about War Crimes and Victims (RECOM) based on the judgments of the ICTY.
The co-sponsorship of this resolution by the Government of Montenegro has the support of around 110 NGOs and over 500 citizens of Montenegro who have publicly stepped forward in this way, which is the most massive form of mobilization about an issue in the civil sector of Montenegro in recent decades.
The RECOM Reconciliation Network (RMP) indicates that the social need and political obligation has matured for the Government of Montenegro to demonstrate its determination to shape European Montenegro in which a culture of remembrance develops without the politics that led to 130,000 victims and the genocide in Srebrenica in July 1995. Without constant reflection on the past and without critical thought and research, entire societies can remain petrified in false myths about the past, and responsibility can turn into its opposite, in which reality and the present are no longer recognized, who is the victim and who is the perpetrator.
Srebrenica, as a historical and ethical crossroads of contemporary Europe, should be permanently marked with such a document, to warn and demand objective confirmation, and above all to act for a peaceful, conscious future.
