Centre for Civic Education (CCE) has organized advanced medial literacy training in Budva on 12 and 13 September 2020 for 20 journalists working in local media or correspondents from the local level.
During this intensive programme, which was led by lecturers from the SHARE foundation, the participants had the opportunity to become more familiar with the concepts such as monitoring of digital rights, the architecture of the internet, cyber safety for journalists, fight for data (likes, comments and shares) and data protection for journalists. The journalists discussed with lecturers about investigative work with open sources, freedom of expression on the internet and media eco-system, as well as election campaigns on the internet.
The lecturers for this specialized training were Đorđe Krivokapić, co-founder of SHARE foundation and associate professor of the Faculty of Organizational Sciences at the University of Belgrade, Filip Milošević, development coordinator in SHARE foundation and an engineer for audio and video technology, and Jelena Adamović, the researcher in SHARE foundation and a lawyer.
Reflecting to the training, one of the participants, Nenad Pavićević, a journalist from RTV Budva, assessed that „this media literacy training is important because most journalists in Montenegro, especially those of older generations, did not have the opportunity to learn more about the online media and the internet apart for very brief knowledge about basic browsing. We, the journalists of younger generations, refreshed what we already know and upgraded our knowledge in the part that was maybe too complicated in the past or we did not pay enough attention to it.“
Branko Čupić, a journalist at the portal Onogošt from Nikšić underlines the importance of this training in part of “more detailed knowledge related to journalism which in these times is becoming even more crucial”. “The lectures were motivating and it was noticeable how colleagues, especially those from traditional media, as well as us from internet portals, were interested to learn the techniques for internet behavior that will be supportive for our daily reporting”, states Čupić.
The training was part of the capacity building programme of local media, which previously included training for financial forensics and research techniques, and it is organized within the framework of the project “Support to local media – first-hand stories! Support for investigative journalism and media literacy at the local level in Montenegro”.
The project is conducted by the B film Montenegro, the Centre for Civic Education (CCE), the Share Foundation and the Institute for Business and Financial Literacy. The project is funded by the EU through the EU Delegation to Montenegro and co-financed by the Ministry of Public Administration of the Government of Montenegro.
